Oh Canada! Lessons From Our Upstairs Neighbor - Boom Marketing Group

Today is Canada Day — and if you didn’t know, now you do. July 1st marks the day our friendly northern neighbors celebrate the birth of their confederation back in 1867 (USA’s was back in 1776, 91 years before Canada – if you want to seem smart to your friends in a few days!).

Think of Canada as America’s quiet upstairs roommate. The one who politely shovels your driveway at 5 a.m., hands you a beer without a single political comment, and only occasionally peeks down to ask, “Hey, you sure you guys are good down there?”

While we’re busy throwing loud Fourth of July pool parties and arguing about egg prices, Canada is up there humming along with universal healthcare, poutine, maple syrup, and that eternal supply of “sorry” jokes.

But here’s the thing: whether you love hockey, maple leaf flags, or just their weird obsession with ketchup chips, Canada offers us a reminder.

In business (and life), understanding your neighbors — literal or figurative — gives you power. It builds bridges. It creates instant trust. You might not be closing deals over Tim Hortons coffee, but when you know something meaningful about where someone comes from, you instantly set yourself apart.

70% of merchant processing deals are referral-based. People work with people they trust. And people trust those who care enough to understand them, even in small ways.

So today, give a little nod to our friends upstairs. Learn a new fact. Drop a fun Canada line at the BBQ. Surprise a business owner by knowing their national holiday or asking if they’ve been back to see their family recently.

Celebrate diversity. Respect roots. Build bridges — because that’s what real marketing (and real human connection) is all about.

Happy Canada Day. 🇨🇦
Grab a Labatt, raise a toast, and remember: learning about the world isn’t just trivia — it’s a superpower.
